Since its inception, Sing Out Loud Festival has become a defining event for St. Augustine, blending the city's rich history and vibrant arts scene into a multi-week celebration of live music every September. What started as a humble gathering of musicians has evolved into one of the largest music festivals in Florida, drawing thousands of music lovers from across the state and beyond.

The Beginning: A Grassroots Idea

The festival was born in 2016, inspired by a desire to showcase local talent while inviting renowned artists to perform in St. Augustine’s unique venues. Produced by the same team that manages and operates The St. Augustine Amphitheatre, Ponte Vedra Concert Hall and Fort Mose Jazz & Blues Series, the first Sing Out Loud Festival featured 130 acts representing an eclectic mix of genres, from indie rock to folk, country, comedy, and blues, performing at 10 different venues, including The Backyard Stage at The St. Augustine Amphitheatre and intimate downtown spaces.

The inaugural year highlighted the area’s dedication to supporting the arts, with a mix of free and ticketed concerts making live music accessible to everyone. This grassroots spirit continues to define the festival's ethos.

Expanding the Vision

As Sing Out Loud grew, so did its lineup and reputation. National acts such as Kacey Musgraves, Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit, The Decemberists, Jenny Lewis, Kurt Vile and St. Paul & the Broken Bones began to grace the stages, complementing performances by local and regional musicians. The festival became a platform for emerging artists, fostering a sense of discovery for audiences.

With its expansion, Sing Out Loud introduced initiatives that reflected the community's values, such as partnerships with local businesses, food vendors, and nonprofits. These collaborations not only enhanced the festival experience but also supported St. Augustine’s vibrant local economy. Artist development workshops and industry panels were also introduced, adding an educational element to the festival.

A Festival with a Cause

Sing Out Loud quickly distinguished itself by merging music with philanthropy. Over the years, the festival has raised over $637,000 for music in schools, mental health, domestic abuse prevention and most recently land conservation. In 2024, a $160,000 donation to the St. Johns County Land Acquisition Management Program (LAMP) and to the City of St. Augustine’s Conservation Program highlighted the festival’s commitment to protecting Wild Florida, ensuring that the natural beauty of the region remains for generations to come.

A Cultural Milestone

Today, Sing Out Loud is a cornerstone of St. Augustine’s cultural calendar, drawing tens of thousands of attendees annually. Its unique mix of free and ticketed performances ensures accessibility while fostering a sustainable model for community engagement. From local legends to global stars, the festival continues to reflect the diverse voices and immersive experiences that make St. Augustine a special place.

Looking Ahead

Sing Out Loud Festival stands as more than a music event; it’s a celebration of the shared values of community, creativity, and philanthropy. As it continues to evolve, the festival aims to deepen its impact, finding new ways to spotlight live music, increase awareness for Wild Florida, and bring people together.

From its humble beginnings to its role as a leader in music-driven philanthropy, Sing Out Loud Festival is a testament to the power of art to inspire change and build connections. As St. Augustine continues to grow as a cultural hub, Sing Out Loud will undoubtedly remain at the heart of its story.
