Trampled by Turtles

Hailing from Duluth, Minnesota, Trampled by Turtles was formed in 2003 by frontman Dave Simonett. After losing his music equipment to a car theft, Simonett started anew with just an acoustic guitar, drawing inspiration from bluegrass, folk, and other acoustic genres. Alongside bandmates Ryan Young (fiddler), Tim Saxhaug (bassist), Erik Berry (mandolinist), and Dave Carroll (banjo player), the group developed a dynamic sound blending rock & roll and bluegrass.

Their debut album, Songs from a Ghost Town (2004), introduced their unique style, merging rock roots with acoustic melodies. Subsequent albums like Blue Sky and the Devil (2005) and Trouble (2007) continued this trend, but it was their 2008 release, Duluth, that earned them recognition in the bluegrass community, peaking at number eight on the Billboard bluegrass chart.

With their 2010 album, Palomino, Trampled by Turtles topped the bluegrass chart and stayed in the Top Ten for over a year. Their 2012 release, Stars and Satellites, reached number 32 on the Billboard 200, highlighting their crossover appeal. They have since graced stages at major festivals like Coachella, ACL Fest, and Lollapalooza. The concert album Live at First Avenue (2013) and the darker-toned Wild Animals (2014) further solidified their presence in the music scene, and their most recent work, Alpenglow (2022), produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, continues to showcase their evolving sound.
